THEME:
FOSTERING THE GROWTH OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN GHANA THROUGH COLLABORATIVE MINISTRY
Background
By convoking this Synod, Pope Francis invites the entire Church to reflect on the theme that is decisive for its life and mission. “It is precisely this path of synodality which God expects of the Church of the third millennium.”
Following in the wake of the renewal of the Church proposed by the Second Vatican Council, this common journey together is both a gift and a task. By reflecting together on the journey that has been made so far, the diverse numbers of the Church will be able to learn from one another’s experiences and perspectives, guided by the Holy Spirit (PD.1).
Enlightened by the Word of God and united in prayer, we will be able to discern the processes to seek God’s will and pursue the pathways to which God calls us towards deeper communion, fuller participation and greater openness to fulfilling our mission in the world.
This Synodal Church intends to deepen our understanding of the image of the “People of God” as expressed by the Scriptures and Second Vatican Council. Concretely, synodality allows the people of God to be companions on a journey, listening to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God became “flesh among us.” So, we live in communion with Jesus and making disciples as missionaries and pilgrims.
In the preamble of the communiqué issued by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference at the end of their annual plenary assembly held in Donkokrom in Eastern Region of Ghana from November 4-12, 2022 reflected on the theme: “FOR A SYNODAL CHURCH: COMMUNION, PARTICIPATION AND MISSION IN THE LIGHT OF THE NEW EVANGELIZATION IN GHANA.”
This theme according to the Bishops, was inspired by the synodal process initiated by Pope Francis in October 2021 to last till October 2024. A wide range of consultations will be done with the entire Church and its members, clergy, consecrated man and women, and lay faithful to walk together as ‘companions on a journey’ to carry out the mission entrusted to us in the light of the new evangelization in our time.
THE SYNOD PRAYER
We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name. With You alone to guide us, make Yourself at home in our hearts; Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it. We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions. Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right. All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son forever and ever. Amen

Ho Diocese was created on December 19, 1994, the same day the Diocese of Keta-Akatsi and the Diocese of Jasikan were both created from formerly Keta-Ho Diocese (June 20, 1975), formerly Keta Diocese which they had all belonged (April 18, 1950) and which was carved out of the Vicariate of Gold Coast and which also descended from Vicariate Apostolic of Lower Volta, Dahomey (March 15, 1923), present-day the Republic of Benin.
The present Ho Diocese is located in three regions of the Republic of Ghana: Volta, Eastern and Oti. It constitutes eleven Administrative Districts, namely, Ho, Kpando and Hohoe municipal areas. Others include North Dayi, South Dayi, Adaklu, Agortime-Ziope, Ho West, Afadjato South, Guan Districts and part of Asuogyaman District in the Eastern Region (cf: Diocesan Strategic Plan, pp. 4-5).
