BRIEF HISTORY OF EMMANUEL KOFI FIANU, SVD
Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, SVD was born on 14th June 1957 at Tegbi in the Keta-Akatsi Diocese. He had the first part of his primary education at the Roman Catholic Primary School Tegbi. He continued his primary and middle school education at the Roman Catholic Primary and Middle Schools in Ada-Foah. He had his secondary education at the Ada Secondary School in Ada-Foah.

In 1976 he joined the Divine Word Missionaries and was sent to St. Victor’s Major Seminary in Tamale to study Philosophy. In 1979 he entered the Divine Word Novitiate in Nkwatia-Kwahu at the end of which he professed his first vows at the St. George Catholic Parish (now Cathedral) in Koforidua on 8th September 1980.

After the profession of first vows, Emmanuel Kofi Fianu, SVD returned Tamale to continue his religious, missionary priestly formation in St. Victor’s Major Seminary. After three years of theological studies, he obtained a Diploma in Theology from the University of Ghana, Legon. He then had one year pastoral ministry at the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in Tatale in the Yendi Diocese. He professed Perpetual Vows on 8th September 1985 at the Sacred Heart Parish, Derby Avenue, Accra. He also received at that time his first mission assignment to Togofrom his Superior General. After his perpetual profession, he returned to St. Victor’s Major Seminary to do the final year of his priestly formation. He was ordained priest on 14th July 1985 at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra by the late Archbishop Dominic K. Andoh.

In the same year, he proceeded to Belgium to study French at the IFCAD in city of Brussels. On arrival in Togo in 1986, he was assigned to St. Joseph Parish in Kanté which was at the time part of the Dapaong Diocese, now in the Kara Diocese. His pastoral responsibilities in the parish included Primary Evangelization, Youth Chaplaincy and Laity Apostolate. He taught Religion in the Collèged’EnseignementGénérale, Kanté, Social Ethics and English in the College d’Enseignement Technique, Kanté.

In 1990 he proceeded to Rome, Italy to study Biblical Exegesis at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. As part of his study programme, he spent a semester in 1993 in the ÉcoleBibliqueetArchéologiqueFrançaise, Jerusalem, Israel. He obtained his Licentiate in Biblical Science (S.S.L.) from the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome in 1994. In the same year, he returned to the newly erected Togo-Benin Region of the Divine Word Missionaries with residence in Lomé, Togo. He was elected Admonitor of the SVD District Council of Lomé. His major responsibilities included teaching Scripture and Biblical Hebrew in the Séminaire Jean-Paul II, Lomé and Biblical Science in the Institut St. Paul, Lomé. He also worked as the Secretary to the Interdiocesan Ewe Liturgical Publications Commission (Ghana-Togo). His pastoral activities were carried out in the outstations of the Paroisse Marie Théotokos in Agoényivé, Lomé.

After two years of teaching, he returned to Rome in 1996 to pursue his doctoral studies in Biblical Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University under the direction of Rev. Prof. Jean-Noel Aletti, SJ. In January 2000 he defended his doctoral thesis entitled “A Narrative-Critical and Theological Study of Luke 24:13-35” at the end of which he was awarded a Doctorate in Theology (S.T.D.). During his study years he also served as a Councillor, Admonitor and Acting Rector of the SVD Collegio del VerboDivino, Rome.
